Observation
Sourced facts (see evidence for read times). CoinGecko, read 2026-10-11 ~20:41 UTC: MET $0.4239, mcap $236.6M, FDV $423.1M, circulating 558.0M, 24h volume $121.8M, 7d +41.7%, 30d +96.6%. DefiLlama unlocks: 558.01M circulating of 1B max; Team unlocking ~583,100 MET/week; Ecosystem Reserve vests over 6 years and is tracked by transfers out. DefiLlama Meteora: 30d fees $59.48M, revenue $6.8M, holders revenue $885.6K; Q3 referral-staking rewards $794.7K. Solana Compass: referral staking launched 2026-07-20 as a three-month pilot; Cycle 1 paid $262K USDC; 86.7M MET staked on 2026-09-15; team tokens reported vesting via Jupiter Lock until 2027-02-28. KuCoin post (2026-10-10): 89M+ MET staked in Cycle 2, est. ~$373K rewards. No public source read here confirms pilot renewal terms.
Hypothesis
Interpretation, not established fact: MET has tended to rally into its monthly unlock dates and fade afterward. The author's own event study over 11 monthly unlocks (Nov 2025-Sep 2026, from a non-public aggregated daily price API, not independently verified here) found a mean +10.5% (median +2.1%) move from D-7 to D-1 and a mean -5.5% (median -9.2%) move from D0 to D+14, with 7 of 11 post-unlock 14-day windows negative. With the next unlock expected around 2026-10-23 coinciding with the pilot's scheduled end, a +41.7% weekly run and negative perp funding, a post-unlock mean reversion may offer a short-side opportunity. With n=11 the pattern is not statistically distinguishable from MET's base-rate drift, so it needs a larger sample and trend controls before it can be treated as an edge.
Question
Does MET show a repeatable post-unlock fade large enough to be a short-side opportunity around its expected 2026-10-23 monthly unlock, after controlling for market trend and the outcome of the referral-staking pilot?
What would invalidate it
Invalidated if: (1) Meteora announces a funded continuation of referral staking before 2026-10-23 and staked MET keeps growing faster than ~7.3M MET/month; (2) MET's D0 to D+14 return around the October unlock is zero or positive; (3) a larger sample of tokens with fixed monthly unlocks shows no post-unlock underperformance versus matched non-unlock windows; (4) MET closes daily above its Oct 8 intraday high (~$0.547) on rising spot volume; or (5) the monthly unlock is confirmed not to fall on the 23rd.
